The transition to electric vehicles in last-mile delivery is not just an environmental imperative — it is an economic one. Electric motorcycles, in particular, are proving to be a superior choice for urban deliveries in African cities, offering lower operating costs, reduced maintenance, and access to increasingly restricted city centers.

The economics are compelling. An electric motorcycle costs approximately 60% less to operate per kilometer compared to its petrol equivalent. With fuel prices continuing to rise, the savings compound over time. For a business operating 50 delivery motorcycles, the annual savings can exceed KES 5 million.

Maintenance costs are also significantly lower. Electric motorcycles have far fewer moving parts than internal combustion engine vehicles. There are no oil changes, no spark plugs, no fuel filters, and no complex transmission systems. This translates to fewer breakdowns and lower maintenance expenses.

Environmental benefits are substantial. A single electric motorcycle eliminates approximately 2.5 tons of CO2 emissions per year compared to a petrol equivalent. For a fleet of 100 electric motorcycles, that is 250 tons of CO2 saved annually — the equivalent of planting over 4,000 trees.

City regulations are increasingly favoring electric vehicles. Nairobi and other major African cities are beginning to implement low-emission zones and incentives for electric commercial vehicles. Early adopters of electric fleets will be well-positioned as these regulations expand.

At Safaribid, we have partnered with leading electric vehicle manufacturers to integrate their fleets into our delivery network. Our platform includes battery management features, range-optimized routing, and charging station integration to maximize the efficiency of electric delivery fleets.
